Living consciously is about taking control of our life, about making intentional and deliberate decisions, about having a life that we want rather than settling for the one that befalls us. When we do this, we have the capacity to make the world a better place. This week, during Plastic Free July and in the middle of a global pandemic, we look to ways of which to live consciously in our day to day lives.

A life lived of choice is a life of conscious action. A life lived of chance is a life of unconscious creation.

We have Collated 5 Principals to Live a Conscious Life

1. Embrace the truth, even if it is bitter – things happen and we have a choice to get better or get bitter. Maintaining a positive emotional state regardless of circumstances is a challenge we all face.

2. Notice how you spend your time and focus on where your attention goes – your thoughts dictate your mental state. Become self-aware, how you treat yourself and treat others.

3. Being in the moment is the key to a happy life – focusing your attention and removing distraction raises consciousness

4. Develop positive values, and choose to be courageous, developing empowering beliefs while purging disempowering ones. Being compassionate and knowledgable builds an accurate and effective model of reality.

5. Focus on your energy (with exercising, physical activity) – bettering your mind and body, so that your cup is full enough to turn outward and care for those around you and the environment.

How we Live Consciously

Conscious consumerism is a key aspect of driving change and voting with your wallet. Every purchase that we make is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. This is why we addressed every part of the product lifecycle when designing our Clean Lines Collection, which is made with plant-based neoprene alternative, Yulex Pure.

Our Earth to Ocean buy/give model enables us to drive change in a way that is different: along with supporting specific projects, for every purchase, we donate to one of our charity partners of your choice, and we plant a mangrove tree to offset its carbon emissions (in collaboration with Sea Trees). At SLO, we are 100% for the planet.

The ocean is Mother Earth’s life support, with 97% of the world’s water held by the ocean.

Whilst using our platforms to raise awareness of what we can do as humans, we are also being aware of our privilege, the world around us, and the importance of diversity and equality to drive real change.

How to Live Consciously in Plastic Free July

Through the COVID 19 global lockdowns and social distancing, we have seen societies and individuals slow down and become more conscious of how they want to treat themselves and the world.

At the beginning of the pandemic, we saw many positive impacts of COVID-19 lockdown on the environment from improved air quality and water quality, vegetation and wildlife. However, since then countries are starting to go back to the ‘normal’, and with changes of lifestyles, these environmental improvements will be undone.

Moreover, the current effects of the huge increase in demand for PPE across the globe, and consumers being forced to purchase less reusable products and buying single-use plastic has significantly increased the plastic pollution in the oceans, leading to a pandemic of plastic pollution.

Plastic Free July, is a global movement that aims at being part of the solution around plastic pollution, which is something more important than ever. We invite you to take the challenge and get involved.

For stats, facts, and tips on how to make changes to your daily habits, read our plastic pollution guide – ocean pollution facts & figures.

The movement challenges people to reduce plastic waste by cutting out on their use of single-use plastics throughout the whole of July, and possibly inspire them to do so beyond that.

Read our plastic free July challenge and you can commit to just for a day, a week, the whole of July, but we hope it inspires you furthermore.

In addition, we still need to be using our voices and taking action against racial inequality across the world. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, sign petitions and make a change. Read our activism page and our recent article, go SLO, live fierce, on ways to take action.

Join us, take action. Go SLO, Live Consciously.
